Blues Dedication to My Father (March 11, 2007) This is an entry dedicated to my father who recently passed away. He was a heck of a blues lover. As long as I remember, I've heard BB King live, Albert King live, Freddie King live, Albert Collins live, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, and many others. I 'd say if it were not for the blues, my whole approach would be different, probably similar to the kind of Jazz that George Duke describes on his website. Other types of "blues" were also present in our household by other artists such as Aretha Franklin, The Impressions, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, the Temptations, Wilson Pickett,The Allman Brothers, Mountain and many other's sounds that still reverberate even when I'm playing a tune like 26-2 by Coltrane or any ballad. I am forever indebted to my father for introducing me to the blues. It led me to more harmonically advanced players like Charlie Parker, Trane, Sonny Stitt, George Benson, Wes, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Jim Hall, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessell, Tal Farlow, and many other forms of music. Somehow, the blues opened me up to accepting all types of music that is "good." It's apparent to me that "creators" of music have to be very open minded to the possibilities of those 12 tones. It's amazing how notes and chords relate to feelings. The blues has enabled me to really appreciate the art of improvization. The most valuable lessons I've learned are to be open minded, not fearful of seeking the truth, and as a musician, don't worry about being the best. I've heard symphonic compositions, Latin music, Asian music, Greek, and others that have gotten my attention and respect. However, it continues to amaze me how strong a form the blues is as folks like BB still play it. Thanks dad and to all the great masters of the blues. |
