Setup for Archtop and Electric Guitars  (January 16, 2006)

Here's some food for thought about electric guitar setups. I'm quoting two of the most famous luthiers who make Buscarino and Mapson guitars. They e-mailed me the following info.

John Buscarino responded to me about Russell Malone's setup preference saying, "Rusell likes his action super low and uses D'Addario chrome mediums. He likes narrow Fender-style fretwire. Action at the 12th fret is 1mm in the treble and 1.5 in the bass. Measurement is taken off the top of the 12th fret to the bottom of the string respectively".

Jim Mapson responded that,"Most necks are uneven along the fret plane, and by adding relief and raising action, it makes it tougher for the player. I like my instruments to play with a very light touch with mediums on, and very low action."

I think you should beware of those guitar repair persons who are traditionalists that probably would rather take your money and not work too hard! It's amazing the thousands of dollars I've spent looking for the right-feeling guitar. With each I was told you need neck relief, no matter how slight. Google my comments under Decava Guitars (archtops) under players.

Hope I helped someone survive the BS out there regarding guitar setups. Henry Johnson (formerly with Joe Williams, Ramsey Lewis, and Freddie Hubbard) told me his and George Benson's guitars have no relief! Benson likes medium action and Henry likes it as low as possible.

Till next time!
