Guitars for Days (October 20, 2005)
The big news for me is that I am entering into a deal with Century Acoustic Guitars. They are an independant company that hand builds every guitar, and the instruments are just beautiful. They have a special bridge (that spreads the tension of the strings towards the outside of the guitar to avoid warping) and look and sound amazing. James (from Century) came down to the Camp Freddy soundcheck yesterday and brought six different models for me to play and try out. After a little while, I settled on a mini dreadnought body style, with abalone detail and fret markers, and of course ..... ALL BLACK! They will take about six to eight weeks to build but I will get some pics up here of the finished guitars. Very exciting stuff for me. And as I have said, Camp Freddy have fitted in a couple of shows in the last few weeks. We started off with a benefit show for the American Red Cross (Hurricane Victims) at The Key Club in Hollywood. Just pure craziness - sold out in about two days, and with the support of BC Ethic clothing and Indie 103.1FM, we had an amazing night of Rock And Roll, and raised cash for a very important cause. And then last night, we played a Sundance/Grey Goose Vodka party. A VERY different vibe, but just as much fun. Scott Weiland, Steve Jones, Billy Duffy, Macy Gray, Jerry Cantrell, Jordis and Ty (from Rock Star INXS) all joined us for over an hour of the usual high energy covers. My personal highlight was doing the STP song, Crackerman with Scott. I have loved that song since it came out, and it was cool to do it with him, megaphone and all. ![]() I have also been hard at work in the studio, recording cues for the VH-1 show about Danny Bonaduce, as well as writing and recording a song for the movie I shot earlier in the year called Tripping Forward. It seems like we are now going to shoot a video for it, so that should be fun. I just have the vocals left to do, and then we'll run downtown and do a day shooting in some crack dealer infested alleyway somewhere!! Isn't that where they always choose to film rock videos?? I am off to Vegas on Saturday to play a show at the opening of a new club on the stip - The Empire Ballroom. It's my favourite kind of Vegas visit - private plane to soundcheck ... play the show ... straight back on the plane and in bed by 2.00 am. SO much better than a whole night of trying to keep my money in my wallet!! By the way - anyone (like me) who has been a Marshall JCM900 freak for years should actually check out the JCM 2000 model. The 900's are not made anymore, and I have been using them for years, so I am always on the lookout for a head that is current in case my 900s go down. Camp Freddy always rent a couple of 2000s for the guest guitarists, and I plugged into one of them at yesterday's soundcheck. Sounded amazing!! Even though the circuitry is way different to my heads, this 2000 sounded meaty, with eq that actually worked (thats the problem with a 900 - you have to find one that sounds good from the moment you turn it on, cause the eq does absolutely NOTHING!!!) I will be getting a couple of 2000s for sure after yesterday. Great Amp. OK, so I will make a commitment to post here more often - even if no one actually reads it, or cares what I have to say, the process of writing these journals is a very cathartic one, and a good way to start the day. So if you think you are bored now, reading the everyday occurences in my life, just WAIT until I start posting three times a day!! I bet you just can't wait for that, right?... Keep smiling, do something nice for someone today ..... and turn it UP!!!!! Peace... Billy |
