This One Goes to 11... (August 8, 2005) ![]() What would the rock 'n' roll world have been without the bible according to Spinal Tap? I mean, how would we have been able to make reference to so many comical but true 'rockisms' if Christopher Guest hadn't made such a genius movie? For anyone reading this that hasn't seen Spinal Tap ..... SHAME ON YOU!!! Stop reading right now, drive to the video store, rent it and watch it, and then come back here. In recent weeks I have had the pleasure of witnessing countless 'Tapisms' and have relished each one. I mean, that shit really does happen in rock 'n' roll!! Just try standing next to Slash on a stage and you will know that his amps really do ....'go to 11!!' That guy is LOUD!!! Camp Freddy played to a full house at the X Games party in Los Angeles last week at the Hollywood House Of Blues. It was one of the top 5 shows we have played so far. The guests included Slash, Scott Weiland, Jerry Cantrell, David Draiman (The Disturbed), Mark McGrath, Billy Duffy, Steve Jones, Cypress Hill ..... and Jordis from the TV Show, Rock Star:INXS! Dave invited the cast and crew down to the show, and as it was her birthday (and also because everyone involved is such a big fan) we invited her to sing The Clash song, Should I Stay Or Should I Go. And she was fantastic ..... she had a great time, and sang her ass off. ![]() Slash played four or five songs and his amp was right next to mine on the stage. Forget about any hearing for the next week Billy!! That guy is so loud onstage that even Dave (on the other side) walked over to me during Whole Lotta Love and screamed ....'shit! I'm deaf!!' But it was so much fun. Paradise City and Rock Superstar with the Cypress Hill guys, Cat Scratch Fever with McGrath absolutely killing it ...amazing! The highlight for me has to have been the Alice In Chains song, Rooster. It was just so heavy. An honor for me to have stood up there and played that song with Jerry. And I also recently spent a couple of weeks out on the road with the OG rock and roll band, Black Sabbath. Now THAT is something to see!! The 'Tapisms' were running wild on that one (although I am not sure they would like that comparison!) I mean it as nothing but a compliment .... respect due to the original Heavy Metal of songs like Iron Man, Black Sabbath and Children Of The Grave. I can see how the world took one look at this band in the early '70s and locked their kids away!! They are still ultra scary now ..... and they are all over 50 years old!!!! ![]() I sit here this morning and feel really lucky. Lucky that I get to play a guitar most days. Lucky that I have some of the best musicians around me constantly, that I get to observe the greatness, and learn. I do not put myself anywhere near these guys. I just feel like I am allowed to be a fly on the wall while they play and do their thing. Let's put it this way - I love writing songs, being in bands, and taking part in the crazy 'business' world of music. The struggle to make a record and put it out these days is just so intense. But for me, it's fun. I have no delusions that I will ever be a ground breaking, multi-platinum artist. I just do it because I love the process. HOWEVER ..... if I was to die tomorrow, I would die a happy, contented man. The feeling of playing some of rock's biggest songs with some of the guests that Camp Freddy has, is just beyond compare. The feeling of watching Sabbath even after all these years is truly a special thing. I have been allowed to view the reality of what it takes to be at that level. And for that I am truly greatful. OK - Monday Morning Prayer with Billy Morrison is now officially over!!! Has anyone been watching LOST on TV? Fucking hell, I am addicted to that show!! Also on the Tivo right now is Daves Rock Star:INXS show, The Law Firm, and of course, Seinfeld. Can't get enough of Kramer!!! Might have to buy the DVD sets as its such bad quality on the network. Anyway, I might be rambling a bit now! What else can I report? Well, I am 14 songs in on a new project that I can't really say anything about right now. I am working with two friends in the studio, writing and demoing tracks, and I am loving it. However, I can tell you this - if it all comes to fruition, I'll have to move my column from Modern Guitars to Modern Singer!!! It's all fun and games, but hopefully we will turn it into a real thing soon. I believe that some of that VH1 stuff that I did earlier in the year airs this week. The 'I Love The 80's' stuff is on, and also that Home James program is airing soon as well. More auditions for TV and movies are on my calendar and I am just happy to be busy, with fingers in pies. So that's it from me for now - I'll be back whenever I remember to do another column. For now, have a great week, be kind to those who need your kindness, and be extra kind to those who don't. Remember that, for me at least, the journey IS the destination. Enjoy the process, and stay out of the results. And so endeth the sermon...... Peace Billy |
