Vacations and Other Forms of Sedatives  (June 21, 2005)

diving with octopus

Oh.....My.....God!!! I haven't taken a vacation in five years, and I now realize what I have been missing. See, the thing is - I am a bit of a workaholic. Love working, and love feeling like I am getting things done. Very admirable quality, I'm sure, but having just got back from Hawaii, I suddenly realize that relaxing is like a drug. I want more already - I've been back one week and I already wanna book another 10 days somewhere else.

Holiday brochures are littering the coffee table, pictures of white, sandy atols and crystal clear blue waters are luring me into their web of bliss. Just one week, just one more - I'll be fine, I just need it one more time!!! Hawaii was incredible. My wife and I are both certified divers now, having dived every day of the vacation. Boat dives, wreck dives, diving with sharks, 007 dives - we did it all, and had an amazing time doing it. In case you are wondering, the picture above is me with an octopus on my head. Why do I have an octopus on my head? Well, I'm not quite sure!! But it was fun to do, and the pic looks cool. Being back in LA now, the whole thing seems a long time ago.

I am back working on the Camp Freddy album, having mixed and mastered the first two tracks before I went away. They came out sounding really strong, and are being played on the radio already on Indie. We finished 20th Century Boy (featuring Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols) and Jailbreak (featuring Jerry Cantrell and Billy Duffy) as kinda like 'tasters' of what the rest of the album will sound like. We are all really happy with the end result, and are now trying to get the rest of the record done. We are talking to people about putting it out and have a few avenues open to us. I suppose we'll make a decision soon, but it's nice to have options.

I have to also take this opportunity to thank the LA Weekly for nominating the Camp Freddy Radio Show on Indie 103.1 FM for Best Radio Show in Los Angeles. We didn't win - we didnt expect to against all the big stations - but it was really nice to be nominated. Dave and I really enjoy doing the show each week, and it was great to know that someone other than our wives listen to us babble on each week!!

Doheny are also still working on getting 'the deal' - its tough out there, and despite a lot of people liking the stuff, and loving the live show, getting a decision from anyone is a killer!! We are leaving it all up to management as I think if I get too involved, I'll go crazy. I just concentrate on making music - it's what I love to do.

Guitars. That's what I love the most. I recently took all my Les Pauls (of which there were more than I realized!) to be set up, intonated, and basically given the love and care that they needed. And I gotta tell you (if you don't know already) that this is a MUST if you take playing guitar at all seriously. I use a guy called Brett Allen, who is in Los Angeles, and the difference in playing one of his guitars that he has worked on is incredible. Perfect intonation all the way up, and action that feels like no effort whatsoever - the man is a genius. And his speciality is Les Pauls, so he knows all the little tricks and things that make the guitar just so.

I am working on some cues right now for a new TV show on VH-1 called Being Bonaduce. Its a new reality show about child actor Danny Bonaduce, and I actually landed the main title theme. Very happy about that one - it sounds great over the title sequence, and as well as the theme, I have been doing a few cues for the body of the show. Easy, fun work, and I get to do it all in my home studio. Watch out for the show when it airs later in the year.

So I believe that's it for now - here I am waffling on again about nothing in particular! Until next time (which is a random time frame of .....'whenever I remember to post on the Modern Guitars site!!' ......) have a wonderful time, do something nice for someone else without letting them know, and stay happy and healthy.

Peace.

Billy
