It's Been Awhile (April 16, 2005) It's been a few weeks since I updated this column and a lot has been going on around here. Camp Freddy are playing at the 10th Anniversary of the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas and I am heavily involved in the logistics of the shows. So, I have been on the phone and the email constantly. To give you an idea, we have to get 14 musicians, 6 crew, 3 management, 3 assistants and a ton of equipment out to Vegas. And no, the assistants are not ours, some of our guest performers travel with their people so of course we have to make it smooth for them as well. It's a huge weekend, with Coldplay, Bon Jovi, Nine Inch Nails and Camp Freddy all doing shows. Should be a lot of fun. Doheny play a couple of shows in L.A. in the next few weeks as well, so we have been rehearsing for those and I have been busy doing various other projects on all the in-between days - some small TV things, some writing in the studio, more work on the Camp Freddy album...I like to keep busy. The custom SG for breast cancer that I wrote about last time will be finished this weekend so I will put up a couple of pics of the finished thing in my next article. It's been a ton of fun to do and I hope the auction raises a chunk of cash for the charity. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the event as I'll be in New York that day. But I am happy to have been included and proud to have been able to contribute. Has anyone seen the new signature models from Gibson? The Jimmy Page Les Paul is fantastic - I have to get myself one of those things. The Tom Murphy aged finish is just incredible. And Slash's signature LP looks like a nice one as well. I'm going to see the Velvet Revolver guys play at the Pond in Anaheim tonight, "Hey, Slash, how're things? Gimmee a guitar, mate!" I've been busy getting a 'travel' version of my rig together, as I have to fly to New York to do a show soon. While cabs and heads can be rented, my rack is important and it all currently lives in a big 14U flightcase. So I went to see my friend. Bob Bradshaw, who builds the most amazing rack systems, and talked to him about building a second version of my system based on two 4U racks that can be put underneath a plane - small enough to travel with - but can be connected together to do the same thing as the bigger unit. Two new A+S cases arrived last week and Bob is filling them with the Line 6 modellers, his switcher that I use, a wireless, a tuner, and a couple of pedals, and hopefully, I'll have a spare system that can double as a travel rig for planes. And on a completely 'non-guitar' topic, I have to tell you that Sony's new PSP thing is The Shit! It's a portable Playstation that plays MP3s, movies, and goes online. It's the size of two cigarette packs side-by-side and the screen resolution is better than most plasma TV screens! I have been playing games non-stop (when I have had an hour to kill) and this thing is so much fun. Anyone who loves gaming and hasn't got one yet, go get one. It comes with Spiderman 2 - The Movie, and is probably the best travel accessory on the market. I have to do a fair bit of travelling in the next month, including a brief visit to London, so this thing will keep me totally entertained on all the planes. That and a laptop and I am sorted! Ok, I am probably rambling on a bit. I just felt like I wanted to catch up on what's been going on recently. Oh yeah, "The Science Of Star Wars" documentary airs on the Discovery Channel on May 17th and 18th, so if you want to see me looking like a cheeseball with C3PO and R2D2, check it out! I'll be doing the usual Camp Freddy radio show tonight from 6 p.m. on Indie 103.1 FM before going to the gig. You can also check it out online at www.indie1031.FM. Anyone living in Los Angeles is welcome to come down to The Gig on Melrose next Saturday, the 23rd, to check out Doheny's show. We play at 10 p.m. And that, as they say, is that. Thanks to Modern Guitars for letting me continue to be a part of their family and I hope that I get to updating this column a little more often. These columns are a great section of a great website. Until next time... Peace. Billy |
