Fashion, Turn to the Left!  (March 25, 2005)

Billy Drilling

It's been a couple of weeks since I updated this column, and so much is going on it's hard to know where to begin! Let me see...well, Los Angeles Fashion Week really had me running around all over the place. The up-and-coming designers hold runway shows all week and there are parties every night.

Highlights this year were the Sony PSP Fashion Show, a runway event built around the portable Playstation! Designers made cases for the tiny gaming machines! And my good friend Jenni Kayne's show was also excellent fun. I spent most of that show talking dogs with Brandon Boyd from Incubus, a really nice guy, by the way.

I've also been busy customizing the Gibson SG for Gibson's Breast Cancer Auction (see today's pic). I cannot tell you how much fun it is to attack a guitar with a drill, some sheet metal and an acetalyne torch! In fact, they are sending a film crew down to rehearsals today, to shoot us inflicting the guitar with our special brand of art! I have no idea if it will look any good when it's done, but it's sure been fun working on it!

Camp Freddy played at the Rock N Republic fashion show while their models walked the runways. Pretty good fun, but kind of hard as they didn't want any gaps between the songs (so that the models weren't out on the runway in complete silence). Seems like a fairly easy request, right? Well, it's pretty tough to keep the noise going, and sound decent and bring out a guest star onstage! I think we pulled it off though - they seemed pretty happy after the show and I know the band sounded great. We opened with "Love Removal Machine" with Billy Duffy, myself, and Jerry Cantrell all playing that famous riff. I am a very lucky guy that I get to do that kind of thing!

What else has been happening? My other band, Doheny, is getting ready to go to New York to play for the 'business' types. It should be a fun trip. I try to stay out of the results and just enjoy the process. Gibson Guitar are letting us have their live room for a couple of days, so massive respect to Shanon and everyone at Gibson. Their help is invaluable. I'll do a report on the whole trip once we get back.

Motley Crue played at The Forum the other day. Now that is a rock 'n' roll show! Pyro, pyro, and more pyro! Midgets, strippers, three drum kits (two in the air and one on the stage): Love 'em or hate 'em, go see this tour. It's a two hour extraveganza that has to be seen to be believed. And even though a lot of them are fake, Mick Mars has 18 cabs behind him onstage!

I've also been doing various bits and pieces in the studio - worked on a theme song for a reality TV show yesterday, and it sounds great. Very punk/pop. And I have been doing some radio stuff for a few people, thanks to my English accent (goes down well here in the US!). So, I am keeping very busy and out of trouble! Today, I rehearse with Doheny and then I am off to the Billy Idol show at the Roxy to see my good friend, Mr. Steve Stevens, rock out! I love that guy, and he is one of the best players I know. It's always a pleasure to watch him do his thing.

So I feel like Ive done a fairly decent update now. I want to ask anyone reading this to post any ideas for things you want to hear about. Ask me questions, or suggest topics. Let me know what you want to read about and I will do my best to accomodate. I love writing this column and I am keen to provide as much entertainment as I can. So don't be shy - let me have it!

Have a great week and see you soon.

Peace.

Billy
