Big Neighborhood

Big Neighborhood

Mike Stern has always been a musical adventurer. Some of his past associations include Miles Davis, David Sanborn, Steps Ahead and the Brecker Brothers Band. Stern has long been considered one of the top present day jazz fusion players. Obviously influenced by Larry Coryell and John Scofield, Mike has developed a strong and unique voice of his own.

Stern's upcoming CD (currently scheduled release date is August 11), Big Neighborhood, opens with the title track on which Stern is joined by fellow guitarist Steve Vai. The result is a swirling and energetic rock tune that kicks into high gear from the start. Stern and Vai play off of each other well and their tones are perfectly complimentary. These guys are having fun together and so will any listener.

It is difficult to describe the other players on this CD as a “supporting cast.” Each musician is a wonderful artist in their own right. The group includes: guitarists Steve Vai and Eric Johnson; bassist-vocalists Esperanza Spalding and Richard Bona; Medeski Martin and Wood; drummers Dave Weckl, Terri Lyne Carrington, Cindy Blackman and Lionel Cordew; bassists Chris Minh Doky and Lincoln Goines, and several others. Randy Brecker (trumpet) and Bob Malach (saxophone) also jump in on a couple of tracks.

There is a little something here for everyone regardless of their musical preferences. “Reach” is a fiery latin groove that gives each soloist a chance to stretch out over a cooking rhythm section. “Song for Pepper” is a Pat Metheny style melody that is very pretty and interesting. “Coupe De Ville” is a boppish title with a 50’s era head brought up to the present day by Stern’s edgy and lightly distorted tone.

Other titles include “Moroccan Roll,” “Long Time Gone,” “Check One” and “Hope You Don’t Mind.”

This recording is fun from start to finish. The selections are varied in style and keep the listener engaged and wondering what is coming next. Each of the musicians included plays a major role in producing this fine effort. Mike Stern adds another fine chapter to his already strong legacy in this genre of contemporary players.
