Changing Tide

Changing Tide

California-based guitarist Kenny Carr served as a sideman with the legendary Ray Charles for over ten years. He is one of many players that are not yet household names. Musicians such as Carr perform huge roles with major acts and largely go unnoticed except by fellow players.

Changing Tide is Carr’s third release since 2005. It opens with an up tempo unison melody line played with Grammy nominated tenor saxophonist Donny Mc Caslin. The tune is titled “The Chase.” Right from the start it becomes apparent that the listener has much to be excited about musically.

Accompanied by Tom Baldwin (acoustic bass) and Frank Russo (drums), Carr swings both hard and smoothly through the entire recording. The selections are all original compositions. Carr describes his music as “straight ahead jazz with some contemporary jazz influenced selections.” The album is comprised of both trio and quartet arrangements. In either setting Carr exhibits a strong harmonic sense and well-crafted single note solos.

The choice of sidemen is a perfect match to Carr’s style. Both Baldwin and Russo are top quality players. They provide rock solid backing for Carr and Mc Caslin but are also more than capable soloists in their own right.

“Tempo Tantrum” is a solid swinging melody line with plenty of room for each musician to tout his wares. “Blues For Ray” shows Carr’s respect for his former boss. The strong shuffle-beat background provides the perfect vehicle for appropriately funky blues solos.

Other titles include “Bossa Luna,” “Downstairs,” “Cooper House” and “Costa del Sol.”

Kenny Carr is a player comfortable in many styles of music. His writing skills are exceptional and reflect his roots perfectly. Whether he is crafting mainstream melodies or more contemporary pop lines, Carr is equally skilled and totally at home. This recording is highly recommended for jazz fans looking for a strong new voice.
