Freshly Painted Blues

Freshly Painted Blues

Freshly Painted Blues is the second recording of this fine ensemble comprised of members of the faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Spearheaded by John Baboian the group provides an enjoyable 68 minutes of music.

The guitarists involved are Baboian, Larry Baione, Garrison Fewell, John Marasco and John Wilkins. They are joined by Jerry Seeco (trumpet, fluegelhorn, flute and alto flute) and Rich Greenblatt (vibes). The rhythm section consists of Ron Mahdi (acoustic bass) and John Hazilla (drums).

The compositions are a blend of original material, jazz standards, and be-bop tunes. All of the arrangements are exceptionally well written and performed. The harmonies are full and interesting. Their ensemble playing is crisp and flawless. Each player has a unique tone and voice. That makes for a total sound that is a joy to hear.

Each guitarist has ample opportunities to solo. When asked to provide backing for each other they rise to the occasion with enthusiasm and skill. The opening track is “I’ll Never Go Back To Georgia Brown.” Baboian and Wilkins are the soloists and complement each other perfectly. Their similar backgrounds and development are evident in their solos. They proceed to trade fours and then improvise simultaneously.

Each guitarist has an opportunity to shine during this set and they each rise to the task admirably. Chestnuts include “Here’s That Rainy Day” and “Have You Met Miss Jones.” “Salt Peanuts” is given the appropriate jocular treatment by the group. Baboian originals include “Freshly Painted Blues,” “Octaves For Wes” and “Page 10.”

Other titles include Charlie Haden’s “Waltz For Ruth” and “Cheesecake” by Dexter Gordon. There is also the Wayne Shorter classic “Witch Hunt.”

The “Be-Bop” Guitars project is hopefully destined for a large and appreciative audience. They are fine players both individually and as an ensemble. Baboian is to be highly commended for his commitment to this terrific project.
