New Guitar Summit by Jay Geils, Duke Robillard and Gerry Beaudoin (August 29, 2006) by Vince Lewis The name Jay Geils immediately brings to mind his very successful rock and roll band of the late 1970s and early 1980s. While that was a prolific period commercially, he was always a student of Charlie Christian, Freddie Green and Barney Kessel. He began his musical studies as a trumpet player, and idolized Louis Armstrong. ![]() Duke Robillard established a blues band titled Roomful of Blues in 1967. One of the best known blues players in the country he has an interesting history as well. Robillard has recorded with Bob Dylan, Dr. John and Maria Muldaur to name a few. The major influence in his playing is T. Bone Walker. He recently recorded a tribute to his mentor titled “Blue Moon.” Gerry Beaudoin is one of the most visible and well respected players and teachers in the New England area. He has recorded with mandolin player David Grisman and received much critical acclaim for his efforts. Beaudoin has a burning desire to keep swing music alive and well. He also has a conviction about presenting it in the way it was intended to be shared. When three such gifted musicians and best friends come together to make music the result is a joy to behold. The use of vintage instruments, as well as the way they are recorded, recreates an earlier time perfectly. Guitars from the '30s, '40s and '50s have a distinctive tone that cannot be duplicated by newer models. These instruments also enable the players to enter a very special frame of mind. This all adds up to a special listening experience. There are tight three part harmonies on most of the tunes on this recording. Each of the players is in perfect sync with the others and the arrangements are excellent. From the opening track “Bennie’s Bugle” to the closing strains of “Glide On” this is a very enjoyable listening experience. Other titles included are “Lady B. Good,” “Perdido” and “Seven Come Eleven.” Beaudoin contributes some original material as well. “Swing with Dr. Jake” is a catchy melody based on rhythm changes. “Azure Mineur” is a medium tempo minor blues form. The guitar trio is supported by John Turner (acoustic bass) and Gordon Grottenthaler (drums). Robillard’s vocals appear on “Back Door Blues” and “Never Say Never Again.” Beaudoin sings a very soulful “Ain’t Nobody’s Business”. This album is best described as a tribute to all of the swing musicians who have gone before. These pioneers left a wealth of great music. It deserves to be made available to many generations to come.
