CD Review: The Way It Feels - Roxanne Potvin (March 8, 2007) by Brian D. Holland.
Roxanne’s style is a blend of pop rock, classic rock, blues, jazz, country, Dixieland, and much more. Amazing enough, her cultured and inspired sound is far beyond what anyone would expect from a woman of her young age. You’d almost think it was residue carried over from a previous existence or something. However, practically speaking, Roxanne grew up with a guitarist father and a vocalist mother, and with aunts and uncles who played various instruments as well. Acquiring her first guitar at age 15, a white Japanese Telecaster, there was no stopping Roxanne. This led to the one she uses to this day, a cream colored American Standard Tele. Her guitar playing is as diverse and as interesting as her songs, and her voice is sexy and exciting. Roxanne cultivated her musical taste listening to an assortment of music, from the Beatles and Pink Floyd to Billie Holliday and more. However, viewing Jonny Lang on television one day infected her with the blues bug. She soon came upon the music of Howlin’ Wolf, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Ray Vaughan and B. B. King. Throw some Dinah Washington, Lou Ann Barton, and Norah Jones into the mix, and The Way It Feels is a blend of it all. The icing on the cake is that most of the songs are original Potvin compositions. Recorded with a diverse bunch of players, such as Bruce Cockburn, Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns, and John Hiatt, it’s a ripe and professional sound. It was produced by Colin Linden. The music is soothing, passionate, and good feeling. Yes, that’s really The Way It Feels. The Way It Feels Track Listing 1. A Love That’s Simple 2. I Want To (Do Everything For You) 4. Caught Up 5.
