"This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In)": Chevelle  (March 9, 2005)

Alternative metal trio, Chevelle, hit the big time in 2003 with their platinum second album, 'Wonder What's Next'. Hailing from Chicago, brothers Pete Loeffler (vocals and guitar), Joe (bass), and Sam (drums), started gigging their guitar driven metal sound at major Chicago clubs when youngest brother Joe was a mere 14-years-old.

As opposed to its predecessor, the September 2004 release, 'This Type Of Thinking (Could Do Us In)', is more melodic and diverse. Though the Tool influence is still present in much of the vocals and the crunchy distorted rhythms, the new songs are more colorful and spirited. Pete's guitar (a Paul Reed Smith player, I assume by pictures) is richer and more intense in tone. Though his playing is still laden with chords and minimal in riffs, the arrangements are more satisfying and involved. In other words, there's more of a variety of music going on here.

For fans of that Tool or Korn sound, with thunderous guitar crunch and music that ascends in intervals of dramatic intensity and seriousness, 'This Type Of Thinking (Could Do Us In)' is a brilliant offering.

Chevelle appears to improve with each release.

Chevelle is:

Pete Loeffler: vocals and guitar
Joe Loeffler: bass
Sam Loeffler: drums

Label:

Sony
