Classical Guitar Concert for the Hearing Impaired

At 6:30 p.m. on February 22, 2007, the Hearing Loss Association of Greater Baltimore (website) will present a classical guitar program by Charles Mokotoff at The Hearing and Speech Agency (5900 Metro Drive, Baltimore, Maryland). Through the use of assistive listening loop technology (photo), the performance will be accessible for most, if not all, regardless of the listener's degree of hearing loss. Assistive listening systems deliver sound directly to the ear, are able to separate sounds from background noise, and reduce what's known as the "speech to noise" ratio. Mokotoff is, himself, hearing impaired, having become deaf at the age of 15. Despite this impairment, he has pursued a career as a professional musician. Mokotoff's program will include solo guitar music by Bach, Scarlatti, Yocoh, Barrios and others. Story.

Talking about Music

Music is a language of its own, a non-verbal language (if we discount song lyrics) able to convey the gist of experiences and feelings that fall between the cracks of words. "Indeed, the language of music is often able to articulate complex and abstract emotions that words could never express," says the author of a recent article about classical guitarist Christoph Barnett appearing in the Cayman Net News. The article discusses how music in general and the guitar in particular serve as vehicles for non-verbal self-expression. Story.
