Guitar Once Owned by Roy Buchanan in Online Auction

A 1986 custom-built Guild electric guitar (photo) made for Roy Buchanan as part of a Buchanan-Guild endorsement deal will be auctioned by www.itsonlyrocknroll.com on June 2, 2007, though online bidding is already underway. Guild factory manager, Willie Fritscher, built the T-200RB customized guitar (serial #HK100023) that features jumbo frets, EMG pickups, and Grover tuners per Buchanan's instructions. In addition to the guitar, the auction includes both the original two-page endorsement contract that references the guitar's serial number and a photo of Buchanan playing the instrument on stage. Roy Buchanan, recognized as an accomplished guitarist in a several different styles, was the guitarist for the group (he was succeeded by Robbie Robertson) that ultimately became The Band. Buchanan passed away in 1988. Also for sale are several autographed guitars, including one signed by all three members of Cream and another signed by the surviving members of the Doors, along with approximately 1,500 other pieces of rock and jazz memorabilia.

Dimebag Darrell Art Tribute Auction Raises Money for Charity

Hollywood California's House of Blues played host last night to the Six-String Masterpieces: The Dimebag Darrell Art Tribute auction in which 50 Dean ML electric guitars painted or otherwise customized by a variety of music, entertainment, and fine art celebrities were sold to benefit the Little Kids Rock project. Participating celebs included Metallica's James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, whose guitars raised $4,500 and $7,500, respectively, Joe Satriani ($2,500), Billy Gibbons ($2,500), Marilyn Manson ($6,250), Tom Morello ($1,800), Otep ($1,700), Zakk Wylde ($6,250), and, Hank Williams, III ($2,000). The instrument painted by visual artist Mark Ryden that some thought (related story) could sell for more than Eric Clapton's Blackie in light of the art market demand for Ryden's work, sold for $34,000.
The Dimebag Darrell Art Tribute Auction Underway

On May 17, 2007, more than 60 Dean ML electric guitars painted or customized by a variety of celebrity musicians and visual artists will be auctioned at the House of Blues in Hollywood, California, to benefit the Little Kids Rock project that makes free music instruments and instruction available to public school students. The auction is titled Six-String Masterpieces: The Dimebag Darrell Art Tribute, and is dedicated to the memory of metal guitarist Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott who was shot and killed on December 8, 2004, during a performance with his group, Damageplan. Zakk Wylde, Rob Zombie, Sammy Hagar, James Hetfield, Dave Navarro, Marilyn Manson and Alexi Laiho are among the more than 60 celebrities who participated in creating the artwork featured on the instruments donated by Dean Guitars. According to Artdaily.org, the auctioneers believe The Six-String Masterpiece (photo) painted by visual artist Mark Ryden could top the auction price of Eric Clapton's Blackie ($959,500) in light of the market demand for Ryden's art. However, even if the instrument sells for one million, that figure would be less than half of the charity auction record of $2.7 million dollars paid for a Stratocaster in 2005.

The Burst Brothers Interview

by Lynne Margolis.
Quite possibly the most famous pair of dealers in the vintage guitar world, the Guitar Center’s Dave Belzer and Drew Berlin set new records for electric guitar auction prices when they bought Eric Clapton’s Blackie Stratocaster, his Cream-era Gibson ES-335, and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Strat, Lenny, at the 2004 Christie’s auction to benefit Clapton’s Crossroads Centre at Antigua substance abuse recovery facility. They – well, the Guitar Center – paid $959,500 for the iconic Blackie, $847,500 for the 335 and $623,500 for Lenny. That’s $2.5 million for three objects of wood and wire – though in the three years since, their value has undoubtedly...

Tommy Emmanuel Interview

by Rick Landers.
Last month, Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel was handed a Golden Guitar award for “Best Instrumental Performance” at the Country Music Awards of Australia for “Gameshow Rag/Cannonball Rag” a track off his latest album, The Mystery, released in 2006. We now look forward to the 49th Annual Grammy Awards on February 11, 2007, to see if the instrumental will also win a Grammy for “Best Country Instrumental Performance”. Tommy plays like lightning on the track that couples Merle Travis’s “Cannonball Rag” with his own “Gameshow Rag”. Emmanuel has 15 albums of his own, as well as Terra Firma (1987) with his brother Phil and another The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World (1997), where he shares credits with his idol Chet Atkins...
