August 17, 2009Mambo Sons Release "Heavy Days" CDPress release
Several songs on the new CD, including “The Early Train,” “Overend Watts” (written about Mott the Hoople’s legendary bassist) and “Once In Awhile,” have already been getting airplay at college radio stations in the northeast. During the recording of Heavy Days, singer Scott Lawson was invited to an artist residency at the home of Pulitzer Prize winning author Wallace Stegner, based on the discovery by the Stegner Foundation of the Mambo Sons’ tune “Little Live Thing” from their sophomore release. To perform a solo acoustic version of the song based on works by the Pulitzer Prize winning author, Scott traveled two days by train, and drove the remaining 100+ miles, to live alone for one week in the most desolate part of Southern Canada as a resident artist. The standout track "The Early Train" highlights Lawson's state of mind during that trip. In addition, guitarist Tom Guerra, recognized as a top-notch slide guitarist who has appeared in Guitar Player, Vintage Guitar, ToneQuest, and several other magazines, collaborated with blues guitar legend Johnny Winter on his latest release Vol. 4 during this period. Tom Watson, editor of Modern Guitars magazine, said this about the new CD: "Heavy Days is a summer night kaleidoscope of classic rock. A familiar environment, but fresh with well paced energy that weaves influences in and out like they're the owners, not the slaves. Great listen. Makes me want to visit Mambo Sons live.” Like their earlier recordings in their ten years together, Heavy Days is a self-produced effort and the follow-up to the mostly acoustic Racket of Three (2006). Their second CD Play Some Rock & Roll! was called “Best Indie Release” of 2002 by NYRock magazine, and their self-titled debut Mambo Sons (1999) was launched with the help of two rock and roll icons, Rick Derringer and Kenny Aaronson.
