Joe Bonamassa informs the audience at the 2008 Monterey Bay Blues Festival about a word carved into the wooden stage – "Hendrix" – then walks over and jumps on the spot and says, "No pressure, right?" Joe played three different guitars during his performance: his workhorse Les Paul, a Patrick Gigliotti GT Custom and a Yamaha CPX acoustic (photo). The 23rd Annual Monterey Bay Blues Festival was held at the Monterey Fairground the weekend of June 27-29, only a week after lightning touched off a series of wildfires in California. Sitting just a mile from the cool waters of Monterey Bay, the festival offered welcomed relief from the scorching heat and smoke-filled skies that surrounded my home nestled in the Sierra foothills.

The festival has always featured top-end players and this year was no exception, with the formidable B.B.King headlining, along with Robben Ford, CJ Chenier, Susan Tedeschi, the Taj Mahal Trio, Joe Bonamassa, Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton and a host of other blues masters.

With three stages and 50 acts to choose from, there is nonstop music, making it difficult to break away to visit the string of vendors selling clothing, jewelry, artwork, and of course, food.
And, being a blues festival, great barbeque was plentiful. It took a growling stomach to finally coerce me to go for a plate of ribs and beans and a cold beer.

As a photographer, I love it that two of the stages, The Presidents Stage and The Garden Stage, allow festival-goers to get close to the musicians. As long as you can stay out of the way of the dancers, it’s possible to get some nice shots.

The festival features a mix of veteran, journeyman, and newcomer musicians. In addition to featured young performers like the Homemade Jamz’ Blues Band, the festival also promoted the Blues in the Schools Program (BITS), which is “dedicated to providing educational music programs for schools.”

The Monterey Blues Festival also officially announced Dennis Murphy as the new BITS Program Director. Dennis not only had a great show with his own band, he also backed up several BITS performers, providing an opportunity for these young people to play before a live audience. It was a sweet experience watching and listening to the young musicians, who in time may gain the stature of the blues greats we revere today.
