In conjunction with the 2008 24th International Blues Challenge, which saw 159 acts from 36 states, 10 countries and 6 continents compete for a variety of prizes, The Blues Foundation held its annual Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) Award ceremony at the Downtown Doubletree Hotel in Memphis on February 2, 2008. Twenty-one individuals and organizations were honored with a KBA at this year's event (a full list of honorees is available on the Blues Foundation website).

According to The Blues Foundation: The Keeping the Blues Alive Awards recognize the significant contributions to blues music made by the people behind the scenes. Each is selected on the basis of merit by a select panel of blues professionals. “The committee is once again impressed with the quality of the selected recipients - the outstanding men, women, and organizations that have evidenced a longstanding commitment to the Blues genre," said noted blues journalist, educator and KBA Chairman, Art Tripaldi. "In recent years, The Blues Foundation has increasingly recognized the global reach of this indigenous Afro-American art form and the 2008 honorees certainly reflect this awareness, with recipients hailing from Canada, France, and Sweden, in addition to the United States."
