The acclaimed actor Danny Glover will be the focus of a special evening celebrating his remarkable career and his collaboration with filmmaker John Sayles on the new movie Honeydripper. The program, presented by the Museum of the Moving Image on Wednesday, December 19, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at The Times Center, also includes a special musical performance by Gary Clark Jr., the astonishing young blues guitarist from Austin, Texas, who is featured in Honeydripper.

Danny Glover, currently appearing on the TV series Brothers and Sisters, is best known for his performances in films including Dreamgirls, The Color Purple, To Sleep with Anger, and The Lethal Weapon movies. In the music-filled drama Honeydripper, set in 1950s Alabama, he plays the owner of a roadhouse nightclub threatened by the advent of rock ‘n’ roll. John Sayles, the pioneering independent filmmaker whose previous movies include The Brother from Another Planet, Matewan, and Lone Star, will participate in a conversation with Glover, moderated by Chief Curator David Schwartz. Scenes from Honeydripper will be shown, and the evening will be capped by a set of live music by Gary Clark Jr.

Reviewing the film in Variety, John Anderson wrote that “in the endearing musical time-piece Honeydripper, the indie icon [Sayles] lets his narrative gifts take the lead and the social issues follow like a tight bass line. The result is one of Sayles' best films. The music, a mix of blues, seminal rock and newcomer Gary Clark Jr.'s performance, will be an obvious draw, as will the performances by Danny Glover and other leading African-American actors.”

Tickets are $25 public/$17 Museum members/free for Sponsor-level members and above. Tickets may be ordered online at www.movingimage.us or call 718.784.4520.

The Times Center, at 242 W. 41st Street, is the venue for a monthly series presented by the Museum of the Moving Image. Past guests have included Chris Matthews, Sidney Lumet, Ethan Hawke, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, Ang Lee, Joan Allen, and James Schamus.

Museum of the Moving Image is dedicated to advancing the public understanding and appreciation of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media. It does so by collecting, preserving, and providing access to the nation’s largest permanent collection of moving-image artifacts; screening significant films and other moving-image works; presenting exhibitions of artifacts, artworks, and interactive experiences; and offering educational and interpretive programs to students, teachers, and the general public. A major expansion and renovation, scheduled for completion in 2009, will add new film theaters, galleries, and an education center. More information at www.movingimage.us.
