Guitar Fest Features Hendrix Tribute and World Record Challenge

South Australia’s First Annual Adelaide International Guitar Festival plans to set a world record. One of the highlights of the festival (November 23 - December 3, 2007, at Elder Park) will be Australia’s attempt to top India’s Guinness Book of World Records for the biggest band in the world.

Though the focus of the festival is the presentation of world-class guitarists in genres such as jazz, folk, rock, classical, blues and roots, Spanish, slide, experimental and a fusion of musical styles, event organizers hope to bring together more than 2,000 guitarists (acoustic guitars only) to top India’s current record of 1,730. While the Indians chose Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" to break the record, the Australians have decided to play one of the most recognizable riffs on the planet, Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.”

Other festival entertainment includes performances by an international galaxy of players, such as John Hammond; Abdoulaye Diabate Banning Eyre; Jeff Lang; Kaki King; Cindy Cashdollar, Vernon Reid; Anne McCue; Jorma Kaukonen; Ralph Towner; Roy Rogers; Eliot Fisk; Karen Schaupp; David Lindley; Paul Galbraith, Martin Taylor and many more. The December 2 guitar festival finale, Kiss the Sky: Tribute to the Music of Jimi Hendrix, unites a number of festival headliners for a guitar-centric celebration of the Hendrix musical legacy.
