Saint Blues Guitar Workshop has announced the introduction of a new model into its lineup, a semi-hollowbody electric called the 61 South after the famous road that winds through the Mississippi Delta connecting Memphis, Tennessee, with New Orleans, Louisiana. Though tied to such names as Bessie Smith, Elvis Presley and Martin Luther King, Jr., 61 South is best known as half of the intersection at which blues legend Robert Johnson is said to have cut his deal with the devil - the crossroads of 61 South and Route 49 in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

According to information supplied by the company, "The 61 South comes in two different pickup configurations. One pickup configuration features two of Saint Blues' custom wound tapped tele-style pickups. This original design allows the player to dial in a total of four different tonal variations. Pulling up the volume or tone knob controls allows you to cut or "tap" approximately 25% of the pickup signal. At the bridge, muscular and punchy becomes clean and clear. At the neck, deep rich blues becomes very 60s surf. The 3-way switch gives you the ability to isolate the neck or bridge pick-up or to utilize both.

The second pickup configuration features a tapped tele-style pick-up on the bridge with P-90s at the neck. This gives a bit brighter sound with more biting treble response for screaming guitar work. Each version of the 61 South comes in two colors, a white blond and a tobacco sunburst. The 61 South will retail for $1,160 with a street price of $870.00."

St. Blues Guitar Workshop was originally founded in Memphis in 1983 and was a well thought of boutique builder, but closed its doors in 1989. Last year, a private equity group relaunched the brand under a corporate holding company called Legendary Gear. The Saint Blues line now features the original Bluesmaster (61 South, Mississippi Bluesmaster, B-II and B-IV), the Bluescaster (B-IV) and the King Blues Bass. Based out of Memphis, Saint Blues markets its lines of vintage-style guitars and basses through independent dealers around the US and overseas.
