2007 Summer NAMM Show: Day 2 Photos and Info, Part Three

Part three of the second day's coverage from the floor of the 2007 Summer NAMM Show includes images from Paul Reed Smith (PRS) Guitars and Martin Guitar. The NAMM Show summer session runs through Sunday, July 29, at the Austin Convention Center, Austin, Texas.

PRS launched the David Grissom Signature Model, also known as the DGT for David Grissom Trem. The guitar features a McCarty tremolo, special pickups and wiring, an extra volume control, a smaller neck, and bigger frets than the ususal PRS. As seen in the photos below, David Grissom spent time at the PRS booth on Saturday to help launch the model.

Martin Guitar highlighted several interesting instruments at its booth. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love, Chris Martin, IV, wanted a special guitar. He envisioned the 000X Hippie Limited edition, and enlisted Don Oriolo to create its colorful artwork. Oriolo is son of Joe Oriolo, who took Otto Messmer’s original “Felix the Cat” creation and turned it into the widely popular cartoon icon it has since become. (Felix was the first image ever transmitted on TV.) The limited-edition model reflects the philosophies that took root during the ‘60s: peace, love, racial harmony and psychedelia (as exemplified by the “hippie chick”). A one-of-a-kind, hand-painted model also was created for Summer NAMM.

Below, you'll also see a photo of Martin Guitar's Dick Boak holding Robbie Robertson Hawaiian koa Signature guitars, inspired by Robertson's 1919 00-45K, the only Koa 00-45 ever made -- and the inspiration for the famous opening line of the Band's breakout song, "The Weight." Stuck for a destination to fill out the line, "I pulled into ...," Robertson looked inside his Martin guitar and saw the magic word: Nazareth. The backs and sides of both are made with rare Hawaiian flamed koa wood; the front of the the 00-42K has Italian Alpine spruce, and the 00-42K2 has a koa front.

One-of-a-kind Martin with motorcycle graphics

Martin commissioned Nub of Nub Grafix, a custom motorcycle painter whose work has been seen on American Chopper, to create a one-of-a-kind guitar for the Austin Summer NAMM show. The dreadnought's theme is Ghost Riders in the Sky; the cacti and hand-gold leafed snakeskin flames are said to represent Texas. Photo by Lynne Margolis.

Martin's Dick Boak with a Marquis Series Negative

One of the most stunning new additions to Martin's collection is the OM Negative Orchestra model. Martin's Dick Boak said he came up with the idea for the guitar in the late '90s while looking through old photo negatives. He loved the quality the instruments had as reversed images on the negatives. "To me, it looked like a guitar dressed in a tuxedo," he said. The Negative has a black lacquer finish that makes the white fretboard, bridge, pickguard and headplate boldly stand out. Abalone inlays and herringbone trim further emphasize the guitar's unique look. Photo by Lynne Margolis.

The Martin D-100 Deluxe, based on the millionth guitar the Nazareth, PA., company manufactured, is a limited edition of 50 Brazilian rosewood and top-grade spruce guitars. Martin’s Dick Boak called it “the most extravagant production guitar ever made.” He reported 30 have already been sold, despite the $109,999 price tag. Photo by Lynne Margolis.

Martin's Dick Boak with a one-of-a-kind show guitar featuring unique inlays and a soundport that provides some extra volume for the player. Made of Madagascar rosewood, its light-up, color-changing headstock makes it a “a little quirky.” The lights run on a rechargeable battery and are activated by a switch in the soundport. The guitar retails for $19,999. Photo by Lynne Margolis.
