On April 27-29 and May 4-6, 2007, the Big Easy played host for the 38th consecutive year to the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Also known simply as Jazz Fest, the event was held at the Fair Grounds Race Course, about a ten minute drive from the French Quarter. While jazz was the focal point of the first Jazz Fest in 1970 that featured performances by Mahalia Jackson, Duke Ellington, Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, and others, today, the six day festival offers attendees a serious slice of the music, food, and local and regional crafts that reflect the eclectic cultural mix of both New Orleans and the State of Louisiana.

A reverance for heritage is a hallmark of New Orleans, if not the South in general. Though jazz may be the genre that first comes to mind when thinking about the role New Orleans has played in the evolution of popular music, the region's heritage extends far beyond Dixieland. Louisiana has served as an important musical melting pot, deeply influencing, if not giving birth to, a multitude of genres, styles, and unique hybrid blends. It's no wonder then that Jazz Fest has grown to where it now supports six stages and five tents of entertainment featuring everything from traditional New Orleans jazz to contemporary urban rap.

The photo gallery below, by Joseph A. Rosen, features a cross section of the many performers who appeared at this year's Jazz Fest, with an emphasis on blues, roots and Louisiana natives. Despite the size of the venue or audience, Rosen's images are intimate. A seasoned concert photographer, Rosen does more than accurately record information, his tender eye shows a sensitivity for capturing the subject in a moment of personal revelation.
