Photo Gallery: 2007 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival

by Jorg Kliewe

The 2007 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival, Portland, Oregon, is blues heavy. But, looking back over its twenty year evolution shows the blues focus slightly giving to a more eclectic mix of sounds that now includes British blues-rock, American sweet soul music and a dash of zydeco.

Since its humble beginnings in 1987, the festival slowly became a staple of Portland’s riverside experience and is now an annual tradition that finds its home at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Today the Blues Festival is the top fund raiser of the year for the Oregon Food Bank, pulling in nearly $500,000 and 85,000 pounds of donated food.

For five days (July 4 - 8) festival goers could pick and choose from over 150 performances on four stages. And all that at eight bucks and a couple of cans of grub as the price of admission.

The Festival hosted top artists like four-time Grammy winners The Blind Boys of Alabama, legendary British bluesman and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Eric Burden, James Cotton and Hubert Sumlin, Tab Benoit, Joan Armatrading, Watermelon Slim, the Neville Brothers and the the inimitable Queen of the Blues“ Koko Taylor.

The festival makers created a program to delight the musical tastes of all generations. There was 94-year old Pinetop Perkins who celebrated his birthday at the festival, as well as a group of young gun guitarists who played their hearts out on the Workshop stage. The line up of stellar blues artists also included Mavis Staples, Marcia Ball and Liv Warfield. And the British Blues invaded the stage on the second day with Kim Simmonds, Savoy Brown, Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express and, of course, Eric Burdon and the Animals.

Fast Facts About the Festival

• Largest festival west of the Mississippi

• 194,000 people served meals each month
• Every dollar donated moves six pounds of food to the hungry
• Each year the festival attracts over 120,000 blues fans from around the world

• Winner of the Ovation Awards as Oregon's Best Festival, Civic Celebration or

Charmaine Neville

Born into the third generation of the New Orleans legendary musical Neville family, Charmaine Neville (daughter of Neville Brothers saxophonist, Charles Neville) has nonetheless worked hard to get where she is and make her music known as her own. The work has paid off - as one reviewer recently wrote, "Charmaine Neville is beginning to rival her father and uncles in terms of popularity in New Orleans." Photo by Jorg Kliewe.
