Spotlight: The Jimmy Page Signature Double Neck from Gibson

Gibson Guitar has announced (press release) that its Custom Shop will produce 250 recreations of the famous 1971 Gibson EDS-1275 Jimmy Page used in live performances of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and 25 Limited Edition Aged Double Necks each personally inspected by Jimmy Page "to ensure they meet his exacting standards", which come with a Custom Shop case, Certificate of Authenticity, custom care kit, two-DVD Led Zeppelin box set, and a copy of a private interview with Jimmy Page regarding the Double Neck (which can be viewed on the Gibson Custom website).

The Gibson Double Neck story begins in 1958, the same year Gibson also introduced the Explorer, the Flying V, and the ES-355. The double necks were originally available in two configurations, the well known 6-string and 12-string combo and the Double Mandolin that had two 6-string necks, one of which was short scale and tuned an octave higher than a guitar to imitate the sound of a mandolin. From 1958-1962, the EDS-1275 was a hollowbody instrument with twin cutaways similar to the ES-175. In 1962, the model was re-introduced with a solid mahogany body resembling the SG, the configuration that would come to be regarded as the classic EDS-1275.

But, it would be in the hands of Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page that the instrument would achieve lasting fame. Page used his '71 EDS-1275 on stage for Led Zeppelin songs such as "Stairway to Heaven", "The Song Remains the Same", and, "Rain Song".
