Re Bethe, rock guitarist and founder of British rock band RITUAL, has produced yet another iconic rock guitar that is well known to rock fans worldwide as the “Illusion”. He designed and built the prototype in the 1980s and the finished version in 1990.

Published in The Ultimate Guitar Book, it soon became a rock icon. He used both these guitars over twenty years of hard touring. They now reside in private collections. The “Illusion”, pictured below, is the third addition to this exclusive family of custom built left-handed instruments by this maker. Re Bethe has been a virtuoso player of six and twelve string guitars for 40 years. He began making his own instruments at 14-years-old because of the lack of left-handed instruments available at that time.

”Illusion 2” sold for an undisclosed five-figure sum to an unnamed private collector. Re Bethe has stated this is the last “Illusion” he will make, and will be using this instrument on RITUAL UK tour dates. He has also completed another new creation, a six string guitar called “The Raven”, details of which will be available on the RITUAL website (www.ritual1973.com) in March, 2007.

The “Illusion Guitar 3” is made from 300-year-old Brazilian Mahogany and has copper inlay and silver overlays as in the “Illusion2”. It incorporates the unique “Plate Resonance system” the mechanics and design of which Re Bethe has always kept secret . The result of this system is a longer, sweeter, and richer note.

“The “Illusion” remains one of the most beautiful examples of British design and instrument building of the 20th century. Its stunning aesthetic beauty combines symbolism and a unique insight into a virtuoso's vision of perfect harmony,“ says Tobias King.
