October 25, 2006Apoptygma Berzerk Shoots Video in BerlinThough preparing for an upcoming tour in Australia, Norway-based Apoptygma Berzerk (Stephan L. Groth, vocals; Geir Bratland, keyboards; Fredrik Brarud, drums; Anders Odden, guitar; and, Angel, guitar) was recently in Berlin to film a new video for "Cambodia", a track from You and Me Against the World. Gibson Guitar was on hand for the video shoot and provides the following interview (English and German) of APB guitarist, Angel, and behind-the-scenes photos. English Version
After their hit singles “Shine On” and “In This Together” the Norwegian Industrial pioneers are on their way to accomplish their newest mission. They choose this spooky setting to shoot a video for their newest single “Cambodia” a song that originally came from 80s icon Kim Wilde. The band just finished a sold-out tour throughout Europe and are now heading over to Australia. Early next year, the band is planning to take over the US. Gibson met up with Apoptygma Berzerk string wizard Angel to talk about his band, musical influences and his mom. Angel, what would you like people to know about your band? Apoptygma Berzerk is a Norwegian electro-rock band and has been putting albums out since 1993. We had our breakthrough one year ago with the “You and me against the world” album. Our new single “Cambodia” will be released on the 17th of November. Beginning of December we will release a cover-versions only album called Sonic Diary including songs from icons like U2, Velvet Underground, Metallica, Marilyn Manson, New Order and many more. Tell us please, which guitar player first inspired you to play and what have been your first musical experiences? I think the first player inspiring me was my mom. But when I first saw Ace Frehley, I really got blown away by his playing and from that time on I knew I wanted to become a guitar player. Later Slash, Zakk and Steve Vai have been major inspirations. I started my first real band with ten. We called ourself Speed Demons and made classics such as “Sexy Legs”, “Overdose” and “Motherxxxxx”, haha. I’ve been in several bands ever since, among them the industrial band The Kovenant. In 2000, Apoptygma mastermind Stephan (Groth) saw me at one of their shows and later that evening he “forced” me to join his band. What artists influenced you more than any other and why? Kiss: No need for explanation I guess Angel, how long have you been playing a Gibson guitar? I have played many guitars over the years, but for the last three years I have played Gibson only. They kick way more ass than any other guitar I’ve ever tried. The earliest memory I have playing a Gibson was when I was around ten. The father of a friend of mine was a musician. He had a Sunburst Les Paul Standard under his bed. We knew it was there, but we never took it out of the case. When I started playing, I had a few guitar lessons with him and he let me try the Les Paul. What Gibson guitars do you currently play and why are they so special to you? My weapons of choice at the moment are the Les Paul Classic and Custom, I also use the SG, the Flying V and the Explorer. I have always loved the Gibson sound and design. When I was about five I started rocking out with my air guitar to Kiss songs, and Ace Frehley used a LP…. Since then Gibson was synonymous for rock music ! Guitar heroes play Gibson and now I understand why. Its tone, design and playability… all is amazing. Hopefully someday I get my own signature model, haha. Can you tell us some tales from tour life? What is the funniest thing that ever happened to you on the road? What was your best gig, which the worst? What happens on tour, remains a big tour secret. There have been so many good gigs over the years, so it’s really hard to say which one was the best. The best gigs are always the ones when the audience and the band connect 100%. A while back at a festival in Salzwedel, Germany, we had to cancel the whole show, because our electronics broke down. That was THE ultimate disaster. We later went back there to make the gig finally happen and the story got its happy end. Our fans are the best! Unseren grossen Durchbruch hatten wir letztes Jahr mit unserem “You and me against the world” Album. Was war euer bester Gig, was euer Schlechtester? Danke Salzwedel ! Unsere Fans sind definitv die Besten !!! Checkt diese Links aus Photo Gallery
