34th Season of Highlights in Jazz Coming to New York

Press release
Source: Jazz Promo Services

Jack Kleinsinger's "Highlights in Jazz," New York's longest running jazz concert series, is pleased to present We Call It Music the second concert of their 34th season.

We Call It Music brings back Highlights favorite vocal-piano legend Mose Allison, who has been dubbed the "The William Faulkner of Jazz," for his rootsy, Southern, Down-Home lyrics to such classics as "Your Mind Is on Vacation", "Parchman Farm", "Everybody Crying Mercy", and "The Seventh Son". Moses’ distinctive vocal-stylings have influenced a generation of performers that include such notables as Van Morrison, John Mayall, The Who, The Clash, Eric Clapton, the Yardbirds, Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt to name a few.

Two years ago the clarinetist Ken Peplowski was paired with the ever witty and entertaining swing-guitarist Marty Grosz. Their collaboration proved so successful that Highlights producer Jack Kleinsinger brings them back again by popular demand.

The alto saxophonist Charles McPherson started playing jazz professionally at age 19. He moved from Detroit to New York in 1959 and performed with Charles Mingus from 1960 to 1972. McPherson has performed at concerts and festivals around the globe and was recently featured at Jazz At Lincoln Center showcasing his original compositions and arrangements. His playing is deeply rooted in the Be Bop style so much so that he was the featured alto saxophonist in the Clint Eastwood film "Bird," a biography about Charlie Parker. Accompanying Charles will be pianist Ronnie Mathews and bassist Ray ‘Bulldog’ Drummond with a special surprise guest drummer.

All concerts will take place at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center (Borough of Manhattan Community College), 199 Chambers Street (between Greenwich and West Street).

The tickets are $30.00 and $27.50, for students. They can be purchased at the theater box office or by calling (212) 220-1460.
