Google to Buy YouTube for $1.65 Billion

YouTube.com may prove to be the tipping point in the struggle between Internet sites and copyright owners. While yesterday's news that Google will buy YouTube for Google stock valued at about $1.65 billion dollars was noteworthy, the announcement that YouTube will pen cooperative deals with content providers such as Universal Music and Sony BMG Entertainment could signal a new approach to resolving the problem of unauthorized use of copyrighted material by websites and their users. The resolution methods hinted at by those agreements include policing of the site by the original content provider who would have the option of either removing material that violates a copyright or placing advertising next to the content to indirectly monetize its use.
