Self-Portrait

Self-Portrait by David Leisner

David Leisner’s new solo album, Self-Portrait, has just been released on the Azica label. The album is a collection of his complete solo guitar compositions. It features his sonata, "Nel Mezzo", a thorny, bold and dramatic 20-minute work in three movements, as well as shorter works which reflect jazz, blues and folk-inspired music.

Critics in the past have applauded his music as "powerful" (Cleveland Plain Dealer), "full of imagination and textural invention" (Classical Guitar), "brilliant intellect in combination with brilliant sensitivity" (Westport News), and Soundboard magazine called his sonata, "Nel Mezzo", "an original and profoundly personal work...powerful, angry and moving music."

While Leisner has written orchestral, vocal and chamber music that has been performed worldwide, his solo guitar pieces are perhaps his most intimate and personal works. In addition to the music, his self-portrait drawing is on the cover. This is his fifth album for Azica. Leisner has also been recording concertos lately. Soon to be released is a Naxos recording of his performance of the "Hovhaness Concerto" with Gerard Schwarz and the Berlin Radio Orchestra, and a recording of the "Heroic Triad" by Andrew Thomas with the Polish National Radio Symphony is soon to follow on Opus One.
