Great weather and a stellar line-up of more than 150 performances combined to set a new fund-raising record at the 2006 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, Oregon, presented by First Tech Credit Union. Blues fans donated $545,000 at the gate at this year’s five-day festival (June 30 - July 4). The previous record, set in 2003, was $364,000. All donations benefit Oregon Food Bank’s mission to eliminate hunger and its root causes.

“We owe this year’s enormous success to the generosity of our community – from our committed sponsors – to more than 1,500 volunteers – to the Oregon Potters Association and Oregon Glass Guild who raise funds to benefit Oregon Food Bank at their Empty Bowls Booth – to festival-goers who donated $8 and two cans of food at the gate,” said Rachel Bristol, executive director, Oregon Food Bank.

This year’s stellar festival focused on the music of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Performers included Dr. John, a.k.a. “The Night Tripper,” presented by First Tech Credit Union; Irma Thomas, “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” presented by DaimlerChrysler Truck Financial; Little Feat, presented by FedEx Freight; Rebirth Brass Band, presented by Good Neighbor Pharmacy; New Orleans “Blues Queen” Marva Wright, presented by iQ Credit Union; Big Chief Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias; Porter, Batiste & Stoltz; Henry Butler; Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, presented by First Tech Credit Union; former Howlin’ Wolf pianist Henry Gray, presented by Karolyn H. March Attorney at Law; Grammy-winning Buckwheat Zydeco, presented by River City Travel; The Bluerunners; John Hiatt & The North Mississippi Allstars, presented by Good Neighbor Pharmacy; The Hacienda Brothers; Tommy Castro Band; Jimmy Thackery and Reba Russell; Rich DelGrosso; Harper and Mia Dyson from Australia; Ian Siegel from the U.K.; The Soul Stirrers; The Lee Boys; A NW Tribute to Ray Charles; A Tribute to Fritz Richmond … and that was just the beginning.

The 2006 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival was presented by First Tech Credit Union with major sponsorship by CO-OP Network, iQ Credit Union, FedEx Freight, DaimlerChrysler Truck Financial, Delta Music Experience, HSBC, Good Neighbor Pharmacy, Chipotle, Miller Brewing, KINK fm102, The Oregonian A&E and OregonLive.com. Next year the Festival returns July 4-8.
