David Starobin to Perform Two Guitar Concertos by Poul Ruders

Press release
Source: Bridge Records

Guitarist David Starobin will be the soloist in upcoming performances of Danish composer Poul Ruders's two guitar concertos. "Psalmodies" (Guitar Concerto No. 1) will be performed at the Tanglewood Festival on July 30, 2006, 8:30 pm in Seiji Ozawa Hall, Lennox MA. "Paganini Variations" (Guitar Concerto No. 2) will be given its American premiere with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Justin Brown, conductor on November 17 and 18 at Birmingham, Alabama's Alys Stephens Center. On that program Starobin will also perform Manuel Ponce's "Concierto del Sur".

Poul Ruders has become known to a broader public with the staging of his two recent operas- "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Kafka's Trial", which were given productions in Denmark, England, the USA and Canada. Ruders's orchestral scores have been performed in recent months by The Berlin Philharmonic, The New York Philharmonic, The BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Danish Symphony Orchestra. The RDSO has just commissioned his Third Symphony, which will be premiered in 2008.

Guitarist David Starobin, for whom Poul Ruders composed his concertos, has been called "this country's pre-eminent interpreter of contemporary guitar works" by the New York Times.

Starobin's long relationship with Poul Ruders has yielded solos, chamber music, and the two guitar concertos. In addition Starobin has conducted many of Ruders's compositions, and has overseen the production of the Poul Ruders CD Edition for Bridge Records.
