The Power of Voice  (October 1, 2006)

So the summer is over and we are back to being fully submerged in music 24 hours of every single day. It is a beautiful world. I love being here. I love music school. I could go on for hours about the acceptance, the respect, the uniform ground that all of us musicians/college students share here at Berklee. But I won't.

So usually I am cribbing about how much I suck at guitar or piano and recently drums. All three of which I can play enough to accompany but not enough to be awesome by itself. So yeah, usually I am cribbing about my musicial instrument limitations. But lately my idea about instrument proficiency seems to be changing. This semester I am in an a capella vocal lab with Joey Blake, the guy who sings with Bobby Mcferrin...he is a freaking genius. It has to be one of the most fun and musically exciting classes I have taken so far. There are like 18 vocalists in the class and he manages us all so amazingly. We do reggaton, afro cuban, jazz, pop. so much so much. And he can sing literally any instrument. He was singing this piece and I had my eyes closed ... I swear he stopped singing and a saxaphone part began but it was him singing it and I was so absolutely freaked out. So yeah. I love the colors of acapella, the harmonizing, the wierd half step intervals...ah the songs are so beautiful. We are doing 'Say A Prayer' and 'Precious' these days. The sight reading is intense but fun. I am second soprano. It's a challenging vocal lab, which is awesome because I haven't felt challenged vocally at Berklee yet. Culturally I've grown up listening, mimicking and finally delivering my voice with crazy scales and sooo many micro-tones. When someone asks me to sing a rock/pop tune, it's not a big deal. Except stage anxiety is the devil and then I suck. But yeah, this class is ridiculous. I absolutely regret never singing in a choir or doing acapella before. It is such a powerful showcase of what voices can do. I get goosebumps in this class all the time when we are all singing together. It is so beautiful.

In other news, I am performing at the Berklee fundraiser gala! Original stuff and maybe one Anoushka Shankar cover. The show is on the 21st of October. More details soon.
